The recruitment campaign targeted at students was a success
NJ Rebar, like many other companies in the construction business has been suffering from labor shortage. People with the required competence profiles and the right attitude are hard to find. Despite various marketing and recruitment activities we received only five job applications from Finland last year.
Situation was unbearable and something had to be done. We decided to try out a different approach and focus on graduating students. At first the idea was not received very well. “There’s no way that university students would be interested in working in Rebar” was a comment made by many.
Why Muhammad went to the mountain
Despite the skeptical comments, I had confidence that students would be interested in working at NJ Rebar, if only we had a chance to meet them and discuss the opportunities that a modern, agile and growing company could offer.
I cleaned up my calendar and together with foreman Pawel Celinski, started our roadshow at recruitment events in the Finnish universities and universities of applied sciences. We went to Rekrypoint in Lappeenranta, to Construction Business Event and Portti Työelämään Fair in Tampere and to Rekry100 in Hyvinkää and finally in our hometown Helsinki visited the international recruitment event organized by the Finnish Chamber of Commerce.
The roadshow was a remarkable success, and I was very impressed to see the development mindset and pioneering attitude that the students have. As for recruitment, the number of applications now is already more than 10 times higher than last year. First employment contracts have been signed and job interviews are scheduled until the end of April.
All in all, the outcome of the recruitment roadshow was great and the results have exceeded all my expectations. This generation also seems to value being able to make a difference and influence company’s success to a great deal, and I can’t wait to develop NJ Rebar’s future together with them.
